A new Back to the Future documentary tells the story behind the DeLorean. The vehicle is famously featured in the classic 1985 time-travel movie starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd. Written and directed by Robert Zemeckis, Back to the Future follows a teenager named Marty McFly (Fox) who is accidentally sent back to 1955 via a time machine built from a modified DeLorean by the eccentric scientist Doctor Emmett Brown (Lloyd). Trapped in the past, Marty is tasked with the titular objective of getting back to the future.
In the years since its release, the acclaim for Back to the Future has only increased, as it is not only considered one of the best science-fiction films of its decade but of all time. The DeLorean returned in two sequels,Back to the Future Part II in 1989 and Back to the Future Part III the following year, once again providing Marty and Doc their means of time-traveling. Due to its dedicated fan following and widespread influence on popular culture,Back to the Future is now a multimedia franchise that spans video games, theme park rides, and even a stage musical in 2020.
Now, a new documentary titled88MPH: The Story of the DeLorean Time Machine explores the history behind Back to the Future's iconic time-traveling vehicle. The full-length documentary is available to watch on the Hagerty Drivers Foundation YouTube channel and features interviews with various experts chronicling the history of the actual automobile and how it became the face of a film franchise. The documentary argues the 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 is the most recognizable movie car of all time, ahead of the Batmobile, Bumblebee, Ecto-1, or even James Bond's Aston Martin. Due to its signature details such as its upward-opening doors and "OUTATIME" license plate, Back to the Future's DeLorean has become an international cultural icon. Today, it is one of the most replicated cars in film history.
Although the last installment came over 30 years ago, interest in the Back to the Future franchise remains high, and this documentary is a testament to that. The films' influence can be seen across popular culture today, including Fox's performance as Marty McFly heavily informing Tom Holland's take on Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though talks of a reboot have been shot down time and time again, perhaps Back to the Future should seize the opportunity while interest is still high.
